Immersed in the currents of British, American, and Anglophile literature, you’ll grasp the history of each and the important human issues they raise while learning to write creatively in their spirit.

At Molloy, you’ll benefit from:

  • A thorough literary experience. Explore the English and American literary traditions, the roots of Western literature in Greek and Roman drama, comedy and epic, the essentials of literary criticism, the Shakespeare canon, and a major author, literary period, or genre.
  • A comprehensive communications curriculum. You’ll have ample opportunity to strengthen and hone basic and advanced composition and communication skills through a wide variety of writing and speaking courses—a key skill set for today’s most promising careers.
  • The chance to study abroad. You may be able to spend a semester—or a year—in another country through our international education program, integrating trips into the curriculum as a way of increasing cultural awareness.
  • Your choice of literary disciplines and minors. Choose from poetry, fiction, drama, literary history, and individual authors—or select independent studies. We also offer minors in English, writing, journalism, theatre, and American and legal studies.
  • Hands-on experience. Take advantage of internship opportunities in journalism, business, politics, public relations, or teaching remedial English, which demonstrate the practicality and viability of the English degree in the world beyond the classroom.

The opportunity to double major

As an English major, you have the opportunity to double major in many different areas which will broaden your career options. For example, you can double major in English and Adolescent Education—without having to do any extra work! The B.A. in Adolescent Education affords you the necessary skills and training should you go on to a career in teaching , while your bachelor’s in English allows you to pursue other careers—either right out of college or down the road.

Are you a creative self-starter who wants to work in one of the many fast-paced new media industries? The new media major at Molloy University could be right for you. A production-based bachelor’s in communications, this major teaches you both critical inquiry skills (writing, speaking, analyzing, critiquing) and digital production skills. It’s ideal if you want to sharpen your critical thinking and problem-solving skills while amping up your technical know-how.

At Molloy, you can:

  • Tailor your education to your career path. Your coursework can include computer science, digital art, digital writing, entrepreneurship, or theory—your program is customized to your academic path and skills. You can even minor in digital art, digital writing, or computer science.
  • Put theory into practice. At Molloy, you’ll not only learn the theories and concepts associated with new media but also how to create engaging content on a variety of platforms like Instagram and YouTube.
  • Benefit from individualized attention. We keep our classes small, and our program focused on meeting your individual needs, with a faculty adviser assigned specifically to you.
  • Learn more specialized, in-demand skills like how to make websites, tell stories using virtual reality, code for apps, edit photographs in photoshop, or design video games.
  • Work with the latest tools and technology. Learn essential web languages (HTML, CSS, Python, etc.), use Adobe Creative Suite programs such as Premiere, Photoshop, Lightroom, and InDesign (with the option to apply for certification), and practice skills such as digital photography, online video production, and web design.
  • Gain real-world experience with two required internships. Molloy has collaborative relationships with the digital.nyc “Silicon Alleys” of New York City and with nonprofits, organizations, and tech start-ups on Long Island. You’ll also have the opportunity to collaborate on unique Digital Humanities projects with #MolloyLIfe and The Office of International Education.

Our stimulating, multifaceted bachelor’s degree program combines communication theory and valuable hands-on experience so you can effectively translate the skills you learn into an exciting career or graduate study.

Our goal is to prepare each student to enter the vibrant communication workplaces of the 21st century. We give our communications students a solid foundation of skills, knowledge, and practical experience. We prepare our graduates to face the challenges of an ethically complex world by offering theoretical and critical courses. Students also complete exciting internships at prominent media and public relations industries. The result is a unique multidimensional learning experience that includes:

At Molloy you’ll benefit from:

  • Relationships with an outstanding faculty. Learn from full-time faculty who are published scholars and experienced professionals, as well as excellent teachers dedicated to your success.
  • Individualized attention. You’ll have your own personal adviser who’ll help guide you and learn in small-size classes that promote close relationships with faculty and other students. There is a maximum of 20 students in studies courses and 16 in production classes.
  • State-of-the-art technology. Molloy has an on-campus HD television studio and media lab for video editing, web design, and podcasting as well as location-shooting equipment for all-important hands-on training.
  • Exciting internship opportunities with such companies as MTV, ABC, NBC Bravo, CBS News, News 12 Long Island, VH1, New York Islanders, New York Mets, Madison Square Garden, Entertainment Management Public Relations, HBO, Rachael Ray Productions, Newsday, FOX News, Comedy Central Enterprises, and Sony Music.
  • Your choice of career-focused concentrations and minors. Choose to earn your bachelor’s in media, professional communications, or education. Or opt to minor in film, television, or professional communications.
  • Distinguished guest speakers and interesting workshops. We’ve hosted such speakers as Alec Baldwin, Director of Diversity Recruiting and Education for CBS Eldra Gillman, News 12 reporters Dana Arschin & Michelle Lamb, Marketing Director for Girl Scouts Donna Rivera-Downing, and Events Planner for Plum Entertainment Alison Harris. Workshops cover resumé writing and interview skills, creating e-portfolios (PR campaigns) or video reels, and career planning.

If you don’t wish to pursue a graduate degree in philosophy, we strongly encourage a double major, pairing philosophy with a bachelor’s in English, history and political science, modern languages, art, business, or sociology.
